E Waste Hackathon

Dhiraagu and MNU partner to launch E-Waste Hackathon 2025

Dhiraagu has joined forces with the Maldives National University (MNU) to support the E-Waste Hackathon 2025, a youth-focused initiative addressing the rising challenge of electronic waste in the Maldives.

Scheduled to take place from 28 September to 7 October 2025 at MNU, the hackathon will bring together students, young innovators, and environmental advocates to devise practical, scalable, and creative approaches to managing and reducing e-waste. The programme is directed at high school, college, and university students, with the aim of both tackling the e-waste problem and encouraging innovation and environmental responsibility among young Maldivians.

E-waste refers to discarded electrical or electronic items, including computers, mobile phones, televisions, refrigerators, batteries, and other electronic products. It is recognised as one of the most pressing and emerging environmental issues. The E-Waste Hackathon seeks to raise awareness of this challenge while motivating participants to create innovative solutions.

Held under the theme ‘Innovating for a Circular Economy: Tackling the E-Waste Crisis’, the event will focus on areas such as e-waste collection and upcycling, recycling optimisation, and sustainable disposal methods. The week-long programme will feature expert-led workshops in sustainability, waste management, and innovation, as well as mentorship sessions at MNU to guide participants through ideation and solution development. Teams will also take part in site visits to waste management facilities and recycling centres before presenting their final proposals to a panel of judges.
