Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives launch Malé edition of ‘Girls to Code’ initiative
Dhiraagu, in partnership with Women in Tech Maldives, has launched the Malé Edition of its flagship ‘Girls to Code’ initiative – a programme aimed at equipping young women with essential coding skills and supporting their entry into the technology sector.
Since its inception in 2019, the ‘Girls to Code’ series has expanded its footprint across the Maldives, with previous editions held in Fuvahmulah, Kulhudhuffushi, Thinadhoo, Laamu Atoll, and Dhidhdhoo. The initiative has continued to grow in both impact and scale, laying a strong foundation for young women in the tech field.
Coinciding with International Girls in ICT Month, the 2025 call for applications was met with enthusiastic interest. The programme officially commenced with an opening ceremony and orientation session held on 15 July, welcoming girls and young women aged 16 to 30 who are eager to explore opportunities in technology.
Over the next three months, participants will take part in a blend of virtual and in-person sessions, receiving practical training in programming, web development, and game creation using Python.
“Girls to Code not only teaches participants how to code,” said Bishaara Hameed, Senior Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at Dhiraagu. “This year’s edition features an expanded age range and a stronger focus on career development, with dedicated workshops aimed at fostering industry connections and bridging the gap between learning and employment.”
Aimanath Shiufa, Secretary General of Women in Tech Maldives, added: “‘Girls to Code’ has evolved into a movement that empowers young women in the technology space. This year’s programme in Malé includes workshops on coding, problem-solving, and confidence-building. It continues to promote digital literacy and next-generation skills that inspire women.”
Both Dhiraagu and Women in Tech Maldives remain committed to narrowing the gender gap in technology and fostering a more inclusive digital economy within the Maldives. Through initiatives such as ‘Girls to Code’, they aim to empower the next generation of women leaders in tech.
