Luxury jet arrivals soar by 8% as Maldives welcomes over 2 million tourists in 2024

Velana International Airport (VIA) is bustling with activity this holiday season as high-class tourist jets flood the runway, marking an 8% increase in arrivals compared to the previous year, the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) announced today.

With the Maldives being a top destination for New Year and winter holidays, private jet arrivals are a common sight at VIA during this period. This month alone, 148 jets have landed at the airport, a testament to the destination’s growing popularity among high-end travellers.

To accommodate the surge, MACL has expanded jet parking space at VIA, anticipating what it calls a “super peak season.” Airport operations are expected to be particularly busy throughout this week, with MACL urging passengers to arrive early and cooperate during peak hours to ensure smooth processing.

This increase in activity coincides with a record-breaking year for Maldives tourism. Over 2 million tourists have visited the island nation so far, a figure that exceeds previous records and highlights the Maldives’ global appeal.

In line with these developments, the Maldivian government has implemented a revised departure tax policy. Effective this month, passengers departing the Maldives on private jets are charged $4, contributing to the nation’s thriving aviation and tourism sectors.

As VIA handles an unprecedented influx of luxury travellers, the Maldives remains firmly positioned as a dream destination for global tourists seeking idyllic winter escapes.
