[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]The Maldives has been crowned Best Beach Destination award at the annual Italia Travel Awards, a prestigious accolade dubbed the Oscars of Italian travel awards.
The gala ceremony took place on 26 May at the Roman Aquarium, situated in the heart of the Italian capital. According to a press release issued by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), Giorgia Marazzi, the Honorary Consular for Maldives, accepted the award on behalf of the Maldives.
Some 43 winners in 15 categories were chosen by travellers and travel agents through an online voting system.
This year, Maldives saw off competition from Seychelles and Polynesia to scoop up the coveted award. Three shortlisted nominees were selected in each category based on voting by travel agents and holidaymakers.
Italy has traditionally been one of the most important source markets for the Maldivian tourism industry. Some 27,167 Italian tourists visited the Maldives during the first quarter of 2016, representing a market share of 7.9 per cent. Italian arrivals also grew by 4.5 per cent compared to the corresponding period last year.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
