Record-breaking seaplane movements mark booming tourist season in Maldives
In a remarkable turn of events, Velana International Airport in the Maldives witnessed an unprecedented surge in seaplane movements last Tuesday, setting a new record for the highest number of flights in a single day. According to the Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), a total of 649 seaplane movements were recorded on the second day of the year.
This surpasses the previous record set in February, when 629 seaplane movements were registered on February 19, 2023. The remarkable increase is attributed to the influx of tourists during the New Year and winter holidays, showcasing Maldives’ popularity as a prime travel destination.
With three seaplane operators in the country, the collaboration has undoubtedly contributed to the efficient handling of the surge in air traffic at Velana International Airport.
To accommodate the rising number of tourists, especially those flying in on private jets, Velana International Airport has taken proactive measures. The airport has expanded its parking space to cater to the needs of the affluent visitors during this peak season. A total of 68 jets can now be parked at the airport, a significant increase from the previous capacity.
In light of the bustling tourist season, the airport authorities have advised passengers traveling internationally to arrive at the airport three hours in advance. This precautionary measure aims to streamline the check-in and boarding processes, ensuring a smooth experience for visitors amid the heightened activity.
The Maldives, known for its pristine beaches and luxurious resorts, continues to attract a large number of tourists, further establishing its reputation as a top destination for international travelers. The surge in seaplane movements not only reflects the growing popularity of the Maldives but also underscores the concerted efforts of the aviation and tourism sectors to provide a seamless and enjoyable experience for all visitors.
