Velassaru Maldives completes inaugural leadership development programme
Velassaru Maldives has successfully concluded its first ‘Leading Others Effectively’ (LOE) leadership development programme, aimed at empowering emerging leaders within its Supervisory and Mid-Management teams. This initiative underscores the resort’s dedication to mentoring and investing in young leaders, equipping them to drive organisational success with confidence.
Launched in June 2024, the LOE programme was a structured six-month initiative spearheaded by Mahmoud Abdelazim, Corporate Director of Learning and Development at Universal Resorts. The programme focused on enhancing leadership capabilities, providing participants with the tools and skills needed to thrive in the dynamic luxury hospitality sector.
The course covered essential aspects of leadership, including strategic planning, adaptability, people management, team development, motivation, and effective collaboration.
Participants engaged in interactive sessions, practical exercises, and reflective practices through a four-stage approach for each module: ‘Explore It,’ ‘Share It,’ ‘Do It,’ and ‘Live It.’ This methodology encouraged participants to learn, apply, and internalise their leadership skills, with support from their line managers and colleagues.
Seven team members from Velassaru successfully completed the programme, presenting their achievements to the management team on December 16, 2024. Their success was celebrated during a vibrant graduation ceremony held at Etesian Restaurant, attended by General Manager Denys Hordiienko, Resort Manager Marjorie Cacacha, corporate representatives, and department heads.
The first cohort of LOE graduates from Velassaru Maldives received high praise from General Manager Denys Hordiienko, who acknowledged their dedication and achievements. The graduates included:
- Raffaf Razeen, F&B Supervisor, Food and Beverage Service
- Ahmed Ilham, Airport Supervisor, Front Office
- Tuan Shehan Johar, Front Office Supervisor, Front Office
- Sarah Nawar, Assistant Front Office Manager, Front Office

Hordiienko commended the group for their commitment to developing their leadership skills, inspiring their teams, and contributing to the resort’s success.
The graduates are now poised to apply their newly acquired skills in their roles as mentors and team developers in 2025. By sharing their knowledge and leading by example, they are expected to foster a culture of growth and collaboration within Velassaru Maldives.
The graduation ceremony included speeches by Mahmoud Abdelazim and Denys Hordiienko, followed by a cake-cutting ceremony and a celebratory dinner to honour the graduates’ dedication and accomplishments.
As part of Universal Resorts, Velassaru Maldives employs a diverse team of 300 individuals representing 19 nationalities, reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and global collaboration.
