Sun Siyam Resorts Names Chaminda Upul Kumara Sustainability Project Manager, Strengthening Environmental Stewardship
Sun Siyam Resorts proudly welcomes Chaminda Upul Kumara as the Sustainability Project Manager for the group, effective from the beginning of January 2024. With a steadfast dedication to environmental conservation and a profound love for nature, Upul will spearhead the implementation and maintenance of sustainable practices across the organization’s operations and projects.
Upul brings a wealth of expertise and passion to oversee all sustainable activities within the group of hotels. He will closely collaborate with resort-based sustainability committees, champions, and marine biologists to oversee and execute various environmental projects. Upul will also liaise with the PR and communications department to actively promote all sustainability programs and activities, contributing to Sun Siyam Cares’ positive global image.
His responsibilities include identifying areas for sustainability enhancement, analyzing data and research for improvement opportunities, monitoring and reporting on sustainability initiatives’ progress, and developing training programs to educate employees on sustainable practices. Additionally, Upul will work with stakeholders and partners to develop sustainable projects, integrate sustainability practices across departments, and conduct sustainability audits to identify areas for enhancement.
Hailing from Kandy, Sri Lanka, Upul is a seasoned professional with a diverse educational background. Graduating from Rajarata University of Sri Lanka with degrees in Travel & Tourism Management and Environmental Management, alongside a Diploma in Airline Ticketing and Reservation, he possesses a comprehensive understanding of sustainable practices. Additionally, Upul is a certified professional in ISO14001 and ISO45000 standards.
With over a decade of experience in Destination Management, Upul’s career journey began in 2007 at Ceylon Tours Pvt Limited, where he served as a Travel Executive. His dedication and expertise led to progressive roles, including Assistant Manager and Senior Operation Head at Aitken Spence Travels Pvt Ltd, Sri Lanka’s premier Destination Management Company. Venturing into international markets, Upul excelled as a Yield & Sales Executive at Ace Travel Maldives before returning to Sri Lanka to spearhead the Nature, Eco & Sustainability Division at Aitken Spence Travels Pvt Ltd.

Innovation and collaboration are hallmarks of Upul’s career. He introduced the “Travel Kindly” initiative, promoting responsible travel practices and sustainability efforts in the tourism industry. Furthermore, Upul’s expertise has been sought after by government and non-government organizations, contributing to the advancement of responsible tourism standards.
Upul is also a proud member of the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), underscoring his commitment to driving sustainable tourism practices on an international scale. His dedication extends to supporting local communities through initiatives such as the “Art of Giving” concept, which aims to enhance the quality of life for underprivileged communities. Upul is also deeply engaged in community development projects through organizations like the Sarasavi Nature Club and the Kalyana Dhamma Social Society.
In addition to his professional commitments, Upul serves as a guided meditation teacher, offering support to individuals seeking psychological assistance through counseling, thus highlighting his holistic approach to well-being.
