Reliance Group employees arrive in Maldives for holiday
Around 290 employees from the Reliance Group have arrived in the Maldives for a holiday, marking a significant return of Indian tourists to the island nation.
The group arrived on two SriLankan Airlines flights on Thursday and will be vacationing at the RAAYA by Atmosphere resort.
Mohammed Firag, Managing Director of Inner Maldives, the Maldives agent for SriLankan Airlines, commented on this landmark visit, stating, “This is the first time a large group from an Indian company has visited the Maldives since the decline in tourist arrivals from India following the Maldives-India unease.” He emphasised that this influx signifies a resurgence in the Maldives’ popularity among Indian tourists.
Firag expressed optimism about the Indian market, which has been recovering following a significant downturn in tourist numbers. “This is a great proof that the Indian market is improving,” he added, projecting a further recovery next year.
Despite a challenging past year, tourist arrivals to the Maldives have seen a 10% increase compared to last year, surpassing 1.5 million visitors. However, the Indian market, which previously dominated tourist numbers, has seen a decline, dropping to sixth place with less than 100,000 tourists.
The improvement in Maldives-India relations, particularly following President Mohamed Muizzu’s recent visit to India, has contributed to this positive shift. During his trip, the President participated in various tourism promotion activities and engaged with tourism officials, signalling a renewed commitment to strengthening ties between the two nations.
As the Reliance Group employees enjoy their time in the Maldives, this visit may pave the way for a brighter future for tourism from India, fostering closer connections and encouraging more travellers to explore the stunning beauty of the Maldives.
