Hotel Jen’s newest café, ‘Jen’s Kitchen-On-The-Go’ held their official opening last Thursday. The ‘grab and go’ themed cafe’ is located in the lobby of the hotel, facing the main road Ameer Ahmed Magu, and comes with a take-away corner, making it easier for customers who are in a hurry.
Located in the hub of the corporate part of town surrounded by government offices, banks, and schools, the café is situated in the perfect spot to take a breather, and collect yourself in the midst of a hectic day.
The opening ceremony kicked off with traditional Bodu Beru music outside the hotel, followed by a flash mob by the hotel’s very own staff, and later, acoustic music by two local artists.
The interior of the café is cozy and casual, decorated in soft neutral tones. The smoking area is conveniently located outside. Speaking about the layout and design of the place, General Manager, S. Vathsala said that she wanted “everyone to come and feel like they can sit here, and enjoy a small snack, and have fun with friends. The prices are very competitive and reasonable now, and people can come here, and just look at our menu board, and order anything off the list, without having to fear for additional charges.”
Giving a tour of the small café, she talked about the different types of wraps, sandwiches, cakes and ice-creams that were delicately laid out for display. “I have chefs from Maldives, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and the Philippines, and everyone does their bit to add a bit of culture to the food, making it all the more richer and delightful,” she said.
“We work with three brand partners,” she said, “Illy for coffee, Dilma for all our teas, and Elephant House for all our ice-cream.” She went on, “Jen’s Friend Chicken, is our special, our signature, known more popularly as JFC, created by our Executive Chef James Francis. He has created a special seasoning and it is very popular now with our customers. We also have the Sub9, a beef sandwich which has gotten quite popular, ice-creams and our macaroons are a hit, especially with the adults.”
Talking about the fresh food displayed every day, she said: “Our secret is that we keep producing the food throughout the day. We will make 10 doughnuts in the morning, and when it is all sold out, we make 10 more – just to keep our food fresh,” she added with a smile. “We also get a lot of positive comments about our take-away salads.”
Executive Chef James also highlighted the fact that customers like that the food is displayed for everyone to see, so they can enjoy watching how the chefs prepare the wraps and sandwiches.
Jen’s Kitchen-On-The-Go is open every day from 10.00 am until 1.00 am.
