Mega Maldives to implement new air tracking system at Palau airport

Mega Maldives, has stated  that they are ready to work with Palau, a destination the company already operates charter services to, on the execution of their new airline tracking technology.

In an email to Island Times –  an online Palauan news outlet – on September 30th 2015, George Weinmann, CEO of Mega Maldives, stated that their proposal includes the installation of “ADS-B” ground stations – a 21st century alternative to expensive radar systems.

ADS-B is a new technology that provides a more precise tracking method of aircraft using satellite signals, a big improvement on the previous practice that utilises ground radar and navigational aids.

According to aviation experts, reliance on satellites instead of ground radars and navigational aids allows more direct flying to a destination, thus saving time and money.

With ADS-B, pilots can see displays of other aircraft in the sky, allowing the pilots to have the same access to view what air traffic controllers view. This new technology also allows the crew to check weather updates and temporary flight restrictions.

ADS-B coverage exists near the surface within 20 nautical miles of the ground station. High level coverage can exceed 250 nautical miles.

According to the statement released by Weinmann,  the new system  would increase safety, operational visibility of aircraft locations and timings, and possibly allow better air traffic management for all carriers.

Mega Maldives, which started flying charter flights to Palau in late 2013, currently flies two times a week to Palau from Hong Kong.
