Sun Siyam launches one of Maldives’ largest solar energy programmes
Sun Siyam has announced a major advancement in its sustainability strategy with the launch of one of the largest solar energy programmes in the Maldivian hospitality sector. The initiative, introduced during a dedicated event at Sun Siyam Olhuveli on 6 December 2025, represents a significant milestone in the group’s long-term commitment to renewable energy and environmental responsibility. The event brought together government officials, local media, trade partners, and members of the group’s sustainability and management teams, who were given an early look at how the installations will transform energy consumption across the resorts.
The solar initiative is structured around three core objectives: strengthening sustainability, increasing energy independence, and advancing technological innovation. Through these installations, Sun Siyam Resorts is accelerating progress towards both national renewable energy goals and its own long-term environmental commitments under the Sun Siyam Care framework.
Across Siyam World Maldives and Sun Siyam Olhuveli, the project delivers:
- Total installed solar capacity: 4,110 kWp
- Expected annual clean energy generation: 6,024,881.99 kWh
- Estimated annual diesel savings: USD 1,292,289.12
- Annual CO₂ reduction: More than 4,458 tonnes
- Energy offset: 17 percent at Siyam World and 12 percent at Sun Siyam Olhuveli
These achievements contribute directly to the Maldives’ target of 33 percent renewable energy penetration by 2028 and its long-term Net Zero 2030 vision.

Both resorts will operate hybrid solar systems equipped with battery storage, designed and installed by technology partner Hayleys Fentons Ltd of Sri Lanka.
The systems include:
- 1,720 kWh battery storage at Siyam World Maldives
- 537.5 kWh battery storage at Sun Siyam Olhuveli
- Real-time monitoring dashboards for optimised energy management
- Technical training programmes for resort engineering teams
This technological foundation enables stable energy distribution, reduces reliance on fossil fuels, and provides a scalable model for future Sun Siyam developments.
With installations scheduled for completion in December 2025, this initiative marks the first phase of Sun Siyam Resorts’ long-term renewable energy roadmap.
The group aims to achieve:
- 50 percent renewable energy use by 2030
- A scalable solar model for all Sun Siyam properties
- Increased energy resilience during peak periods
- Ongoing reductions in the group’s carbon footprint
The solar rollout reinforces several pillars of Sun Siyam Care, including:
- Environmental Stewardship: Transitioning from diesel to solar power
- Clean Energy Generation: Producing nearly 6 million kWh of clean energy annually
- Local Empowerment: Training resort engineering teams in solar operations
- Industry Leadership: Setting a benchmark for sustainable hospitality
“At Sun Siyam, sustainability is not an initiative; it is a responsibility we proudly uphold. Through Sun Siyam Care, we remain committed to preserving the natural beauty of our islands, uplifting our communities, and operating with integrity for generations to come. This solar transformation is a major step towards a cleaner, more resilient future for our resorts and for the Maldives.”
