Maldives’ main airport records 7% increase in passenger traffic in 2025

Velana International Airport served 8 million passengers last year, an increase of 7 per cent compared to 2024, the airport operator, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), said on Thursday.

According to figures released by MACL, the total number of passengers handled during the year included:

  • 5.38 million international passengers
  • 1.17 million domestic passengers
  • 1.73 million seaplane passengers

MACL said the highest number of passengers handled on a single day was recorded on 28 December, when 27,381 wheel-based passengers passed through the airport.

The highest daily number of seaplane passengers was recorded on 16 February, with 7,439 passengers.

A total of 249,214 air traffic movements were recorded at the airport during the year, representing an increase of 8 per cent compared to 2024.

These movements included:

  • 34,868 international movements
  • 28,348 domestic movements
  • 185,998 seaplane movements
