NHGAM launches ‘I AM Maldives Southeast Asia Roadshow’

The National Hotels and Guesthouse Association of Maldives (NHGAM), in collaboration with Visit Maldives and the Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators (MATATO), has announced the launch of the ‘I AM Maldives Southeast Asia Roadshow’, a targeted trade initiative aimed at promoting Maldivian tourism in key Asian markets.

The roadshow is scheduled to take place in Hong Kong on 13 April and in Kuala Lumpur on 15 April 2026. A total of 20 companies and more than 50 participants, representing guesthouses, resorts, hotels and travel agencies, are expected to take part. The event is also set to attract over 120 travel trade professionals across both cities, including tour operators, travel agents and industry stakeholders.

Ahmed Waheed, Vice President of NHGAM, stated that Southeast Asia represents a key growth market for the Maldives and highlighted the importance of strengthening engagement in the region. He noted that the initiative reflects efforts to build partnerships that support long-term growth.

Recent tourism data indicates continued growth from Asian markets. Greater China, including Hong Kong, recorded 706,033 arrivals to the Maldives in 2025, reflecting a 12.1 per cent increase compared to the previous year. Malaysia recorded 24,847 visitors, marking a 25.2 per cent increase from 19,846 arrivals in the preceding year. Overall, Southeast Asia contributed 72,128 visitors, representing 6 per cent growth and a 3.2 per cent share of total arrivals.

Abdulla Nasheed, President of NHGAM, stated that the roadshow is part of ongoing efforts to promote local island tourism in international markets. He highlighted Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur as key destinations for expanding opportunities for guesthouse operators and tourism businesses.

Ibrahim Shiury, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Visit Maldives, said the initiative is intended to strengthen the Maldives’ presence in both markets and to introduce the destination’s tourism offerings to a wider audience.

The ‘I AM Maldives Southeast Asia Roadshow’ forms part of NHGAM’s broader international engagement strategy for 2026, with further activities planned to expand market reach across Asia.
