Universal Foundation, Dharivaru Media launch Dhivehi book writing competition

Universal Foundation and Dharivaru Media have partnered to launch “Foiytheri Fathis”, a book writing competition aimed at encouraging students to create Dhivehi-language content relevant to younger generations.

The partnership was formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding signed on 21 May 2026 by Universal Foundation Vice President Ali Adam and Dharivaru Media Editor Mohamed Rafeeq.

According to the organisers, the initiative was developed in response to concerns over the gradual decline in the use of the Dhivehi language, particularly among students and young people, who increasingly prefer English in both academic and social settings.

The organisers noted that studies on the issue have shown slower attainment and retention of Dhivehi language skills compared to English, with one contributing factor being the limited availability of generationally relevant reading material in Dhivehi.

The “Foiytheri Fathis” competition aims to address this challenge by encouraging students to develop original Dhivehi content while strengthening their writing and creative skills. Participants will receive guidance on writing techniques, creative storytelling, critical thinking and technical writing.

The competition is open to students aged between 13 and 18 who have an interest in writing.

Organisers said the competition will also provide opportunities for participants to publish their work and generate revenue from their creations through attractive prize offerings.

In a statement, the organisers said initiatives such as the competition provide young people with a platform to express creativity while contributing to a broader effort to preserve and strengthen the Dhivehi language.

The organisers also highlighted Dharivaru Media’s work in promoting the Dhivehi language and establishing a media platform focused on students across the Maldives, describing the effort as a source of encouragement for students pursuing academic and creative achievements.

Universal Foundation said the collaboration reflects its ongoing corporate social responsibility initiatives focused on human capital development and national welfare through partnerships with organisations contributing to these objectives.
