MIC hosts forum on strengthening institutional food systems in Maldives
Maldives Inflight Catering (MIC) successfully hosted the forum “Institutional Food Solutions for the Maldives” at the Ras Maalan Ballroom, Hulhulé Island Hotel, bringing together senior leaders, decision-makers, and industry experts to explore innovative approaches to strengthening institutional food systems across the Maldives.
The forum focused on the critical role of food systems in supporting operational readiness, public service delivery, and community wellbeing. Discussions highlighted the unique challenges faced by island and archipelago nations, including supply chain vulnerabilities, geographical dispersion, infrastructure limitations, and the need for scalable and sustainable feeding solutions.

The event provided a platform for cross-sector dialogue among representatives from healthcare, education, defence, government institutions, and other key stakeholders. Participants engaged directly with experts who have designed and operated institutional food systems across diverse environments, sharing global best practices and insights relevant to the Maldivian context.
A key highlight of the forum was the introduction of an innovative ambient food solution being presented to the Maldives for the first time. Developed and successfully implemented in Singapore, the shelf-stable meal system requires no kitchen infrastructure while maintaining full nutritional integrity. The solution has been deployed across various institutional settings, including defence operations, and offers a practical model for feeding personnel in remote and distributed locations.

Developed through collaboration with defence stakeholders including the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), the solution addresses critical requirements such as nutrition, portability, shelf life, packaging integrity, and ease of consumption in operational environments. The forum explored how similar systems could support the Maldives in enhancing food security, operational resilience, and service delivery across multiple sectors.
The discussions also highlighted the potential impact of institutional food solutions across key sectors:
- Supporting nutritionally balanced and cost-effective meal systems for healthcare facilities.
- Improving student nutrition and meal planning within educational institutions.
- Strengthening operational readiness for defence, police, and other government agencies through scalable feeding solutions.
- Supporting NGOs and public-sector feeding programs in resource-constrained environments.
- Reducing dependency on extensive kitchen infrastructure while improving efficiency in food storage, distribution, and management.

Commenting on the initiative, Ashley Lim, General Manager of Maldives Inflight Catering, stated, “As a nation of dispersed islands, the Maldives requires food solutions that are practical, resilient, and scalable. This forum was an important step towards exploring innovative approaches that can strengthen institutional feeding systems across multiple sectors. By bringing together experts, policymakers, and operational leaders, we hope to contribute towards solutions that enhance nutrition, improve efficiency, and support the long-term needs of the country. We are proud to introduce concepts that have been successfully implemented internationally and explore how they may be adapted to serve the Maldives.”

Through this forum, Maldives Inflight Catering reaffirmed its commitment to supporting innovation, knowledge-sharing, and operational excellence while contributing to the development of sustainable and future-ready food solutions for the Maldives.
