Angsana Velavaru strengthens commitment to sustainability and community development
Angsana Velavaru has embraced February with a strong commitment to social responsibility and sustainability. In observance of World Cancer Day, the resort organised a series of impactful events aimed at raising awareness, advocating for cancer research, and supporting local communities.
The resort’s initiatives commenced with a Fun Run/Walk, uniting guests and associates in an effort to highlight cancer awareness. Led by the Angsana Medical Team, the event not only promoted physical well-being but also encouraged collective action for a cause that affects millions worldwide. The day was marked by energy, unity, and a shared dedication to supporting cancer research and advocacy.
Continuing its commitment to community development, Angsana Velavaru collaborated with Rinbudhoo Island to inaugurate a new computer lab at the local school. This initiative, supported by the Banyan Group’s Greater Good Grant under the Banyan Group Foundation, aligns with the resort’s ongoing efforts to enhance education and infrastructure in local communities, equipping students with essential tools for a brighter future.
The project directly contributes to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 4: Quality Education, by expanding access to digital learning tools, and SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure, by improving technological resources in schools. With digital skills now crucial for over 90% of global job opportunities, this initiative plays a pivotal role in fostering digital literacy among students, preparing them for both academic and professional success.
Aligned with Banyan Group’s core value of “Embracing the Environment, Empowering People,” this endeavour not only supports educational advancement but also emphasises the importance of digital literacy in fostering a sustainable and innovative future for all.
In celebration of Banyan Group’s 30th anniversary, the Greater Good Grants were introduced through the Banyan Global Foundation to support sustainability and community engagement initiatives. Angsana Velavaru has taken a leading role in these efforts, with proceeds from the resort’s Green Imperative Fund (GIF) dedicated to biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource management, and community empowerment. This initiative allows guests to contribute USD 1 per night, with the resort matching each contribution dollar for dollar, effectively doubling the resources allocated to sustainability efforts.
General Manager Ahmed Zahir highlighted the significance of these initiatives, stating, “These events reflect our commitment to meaningful, positive change. The Green Imperative Fund is a vital part of our approach, supporting initiatives that benefit both the environment and the communities we serve. It is inspiring to witness how our team and guests come together to make a lasting impact.”
The funds are directed toward waste reduction, renewable energy initiatives, ecosystem preservation, and community development. While the contribution amount varies annually based on the group’s financial performance, it remains a cornerstone of Angsana Velavaru’s sustainability initiatives.
Through these efforts, Angsana Velavaru continues to demonstrate that genuine value lies in the positive impact created for both guests and the broader community. This February, the resort has once again reinforced its dedication to environmental and social responsibility, furthering its mission to protect the natural beauty of the Maldives while fostering opportunities for local communities to thrive.
