Atmosphere Foundation, MNU announce joint bamboo research project

The Maldives National University (MNU) and Atmosphere Foundation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to research project on bamboo in the Maldives.

MNU Vice Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehenaz Adam officiated the Memorandum of Understanding on behalf of the Maldives National University during a formal ceremony held at the central campus in Malé on Wednesday. Abdul Aziz Abdul Hakeem, Deputy President of the Atmosphere Foundation, joined and officiated the MoU on behalf of the Atmosphere Foundation.

Objectives of the research:

  • Identify and classify bamboo varieties found in different regions of the Maldives
  • Conduct morphological analysis of bamboo species
  • Assess the impact of bamboo on soil

Bamboo is described as environmentally beneficial and economically important. A very special variety of bamboo is being introduces, different from normal bamboo. This variety has a smaller hollow inside, allowing for more carbon storage. the project involves planting bamboo on various islands, including HDh. Vaikaradhoo and B. Goidhoo.

The project aims to promote bamboo cultivation in the Maldives for environmental and economic benefits. It aligns with the country’s carbon neutrality goals. There’s an emphasis on the versatility and sustainability of bamboo as a resource. The bamboo research project will have a positive impact on the Maldives environment and economy.

Atmosphere Foundation had in 2023 launched a project to plant bamboo trees in Maldives, in a bid to support the goal of making the country carbon neutral.

Under the project, Atmosphere Foundation is donating 500 bamboo seedlings to the government. Government ministries are distributing them to the outer atolls and industrial islands.

The foundation is also working with Indian agricultural scientist Dr Bharati Nambi to ensure that bamboo planting is done in the most productive manner.

Atmosphere Foundation is a non-profit, non-government organisation designed to enable a brighter future for the communities in Maldives. The foundation focuses on promoting and assisting existing charities and voluntary services, delivering civic engagement and community development, and through sponsoring and organising education and training.
