Bank of Maldives named among Forbes’ World’s Top Performing Banks 2026
Bank of Maldives (BML) has been recognised in Forbes’ World’s Top Performing Banks 2026, becoming one of 500 banks across 89 countries included in the inaugural global ranking compiled in partnership with market research firm Statista.
The recognition places BML among international banking institutions assessed on financial performance, resilience and operational efficiency, marking a milestone for the Maldivian banking sector.
BML has been placed in Tier 6 of the ranking, which covers banks with total assets ranging from USD 3 billion to USD 10 billion. The bank was assessed against international institutions of comparable size, using financial and operational indicators.
The ranking evaluates banks across four key areas: profitability; growth and earnings quality; capital and funding resilience; and asset quality and efficiency. It draws on financial information from data providers, including S&P Capital IQ, alongside independent research and publicly available information published by banks.
The global ranking is divided into six tiers, with international banking institutions including JPMorganChase, DBS, OCBC and HDFC Bank featured in Tier 1.
Commenting on the recognition, Mohamed Shareef, CEO and Managing Director of Bank of Maldives, said the ranking reflected the bank’s financial position and its approach to governance and risk management.
“This recognition is based purely on hard financial data, measured against banks of our size around the world, and it speaks for itself. It confirms what our results have consistently shown: Bank of Maldives is a strong, well-capitalised and resilient institution, built on prudent risk management and sound governance. Our customers can bank with confidence, and our shareholders can see the value we continue to create,” Shareef said.
“As the national bank, we take our responsibility to the Maldivian economy seriously, and we will keep strengthening our foundations, investing in our people and technology, and supporting the growth of businesses and communities across the country.”
As the largest banking institution in the Maldives, BML provides financial services to individuals and businesses across the country. Its operations include personal and business banking, lending and financing, alongside digital banking services intended to improve access to financial services.
The bank said the international recognition reinforced its commitment to maintaining financial stability, strengthening its operations and expanding services to support economic activity across the Maldives.
BML also said it would continue investing in technology, human resources and banking infrastructure as part of its efforts to improve services for customers and deliver long-term value to shareholders.
