Government plans secondary airline hub in Maldives

Minister of Transport and Civil Aviation Mohamed Ameen has stated that the government is developing plans to establish a Maldivian airport as a secondary hub for an international airline.

The announcement was made on Sunday during a press conference held at the President’s Office by a ministerial committee formed in response to the ongoing global situation.

Speaking at the briefing, Ameen said global disruptions have affected airline operations, particularly carriers operating on specific routes. He said the Maldives must adopt a diversified approach to aviation.

The minister stated that the government’s long-term plan is to position an airport in the Maldives as a hub for a major airline.

“Opportunities exist in both the northern and southern regions of the Maldives. We are working towards establishing a secondary hub for a major airline as part of our long-term strategy,” Ameen said.

He also stated that the government aims to expand access for low-cost carriers to support tourist arrivals.

According to the minister, such carriers require specific operational arrangements similar to those at international airports. He said the government plans to develop the required framework to attract these airlines.

The minister added that these measures form part of efforts to expand and strengthen the aviation sector.
