Maldives’ main airport to install e-gates before January
President Mohamed Muizzu said on Wednesday that e-gates are being installed at Velana International Airport (VIA) to reduce the time spent at border control counters.
In a post on social media, the President said e-gates equipped with modern technology have been installed in Terminal 1, the new terminal, to address long queues at immigration counters. He said that once a passport is scanned at the gate, the traveller’s next border clearance will be authorised through facial recognition.
According to the President, e-gates will be installed at both Terminals 1 and 2 before January.
A total of 20 gates will be installed, with 10 in each terminal.
He added that similar e-gates will be introduced next year at other international airports in the Maldives.
