Hassan Sobir

Maldives mourns passing of visionary leader Hassan Sobir

The Maldivian nation is in mourning today following the passing of former Minister of Tourism, His Excellency Hassan Sobir. A figure of immense dedication and influence, Mr. Sobir passed away at the age of 74 while undergoing treatment at Tree Top Hospital, just a day after being conferred with the nation’s highest civilian honor, The Most Honorable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin.

Hassan Sobir’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the very fabric of modern Maldivian society, particularly within the tourism sector which he helped shape into the thriving industry it is today. He served as the Minister of Tourism from 1998 to 2004, a pivotal period during which the Maldives solidified its reputation as a premier global luxury destination. It was under his tenure that the iconic motto, “The Sunny Side of Life,” was coined, a phrase that has since become synonymous with the Maldivian brand.

Beyond his direct role in tourism, Mr. Sobir’s contributions to the nation were extensive and varied. His illustrious career in public service spanned over 38 years, beginning in 1973 under the administration of former President Ibrahim Nasir. He held numerous high-level positions, including Minister of Fisheries and Agriculture, and served in various capacities within the Ministry of Planning and Development. He is also credited with establishing the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) and serving as its first chairman, bringing the first public metered desalinated water distribution system to the Maldives.

Mr. Sobir’s diplomatic prowess was equally significant. He served as the Ambassador of Maldives to Japan, a post he held until his passing. His diplomatic career also included stints as High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, the first Resident High Commissioner to Singapore, and Ambassador to Belgium and the European Union, among others. In these roles, he tirelessly championed the Maldives on the international stage, working to strengthen foreign relations and secure vital aid, particularly in the aftermath of the 2004 tsunami.

The conferment of The Most Honorable Order of the Distinguished Rule of Izzuddin yesterday, which his daughter accepted on his behalf due to his illness, stands as a testament to a lifetime of unparalleled service and dedication to the Maldivian people. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in expressing his condolences, highlighted Mr. Sobir’s invaluable contributions to key economic sectors and his tireless efforts in strengthening the nation’s foreign relations.

Hassan Sobir was more than a public servant; he was a visionary who profoundly impacted the lives of countless Maldivians. His work in shaping the tourism industry laid the groundwork for the prosperity many now enjoy, and his diplomatic efforts ensured the Maldives’ voice was heard globally. He will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to national development, his profound foresight, and his unwavering belief in the potential of the Maldives.

Hotelier Maldives extends its deepest sympathies to the family of Hassan Sobir, and to the entire nation, during this time of profound loss. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of leaders and professionals in the Maldivian tourism and hospitality sector. May he rest in peace.
