Maldives reports 90% completion of VIA terminal, outlines national aviation development
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced on Saturday that 90% of the new passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) has been completed.
The update was shared during a press conference held at the President’s Office, where he presented details of ongoing government projects, including airport development initiatives across the Maldives.
According to the President, the new terminal at VIA is scheduled for completion by October, although current progress indicates that it may be finished ahead of that timeline.
The terminal project was initially awarded to the Saudi Bin Laden Group in May 2016. The work is now being carried out by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) under contract. The project involves an investment of $350 million (MVR 5.3 billion) and is designed to handle 7.5 million passengers annually. The new facility will include 40 departure gates, 38 immigration counters, and aero bridges for passenger boarding and disembarkation.
In addition to the VIA terminal, President Muizzu outlined timelines for two other major international airport projects:
- The Hanimaadhoo International Airport project in Haa Dhaalu Atoll, funded by India, is expected to be completed by July.
- The Gan International Airport project in Addu City is expected to be completed by September.
The President also said that several existing domestic airports will be upgraded this year. These include:
- HA. Hoarafushi Airport
- HDh. Kulhudhuffushi Airport
- Sh. Funadhoo Airport
- B. Dharavandhoo Airport
- L. Kadhdhoo Airport
- GDh. Kaadedhdhoo Airport
- GDh. Maavarulu Airport
- Fuvahmulah Airport
The President stated that airport development and upgrades are part of broader efforts to improve connectivity across the country.
