Mercure Maldives Kooddoo promotes exquisite local handicrafts via Maldivian Day programme

Maldives, a tropical paradise renowned for its unspoiled beaches and turquoise waters, is a treasure trove of vibrant culture and exquisite handicrafts. On 19 May 2023, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo launched an immersive journey into the diverse traditions and skilled artisanship that define the Maldivian heritage through its Maldivian Day Programme.

With its deep-rooted cultural heritage, the Maldives offers a fascinating blend of South Asia, Arabia, and African influences. This archipelago of islands is home to a community that treasures its cultural customs, securing their preservation for future generations.

The Maldivian Day Programme, which happens once a month, displays exceptional skills and originality, with artisans specialising in traditional crafts. Intricately woven mats and baskets, known as “Thundu Kunaa,” shows the mastery of coconut palm weaving techniques passed down through generations. These versatile creations are visually stunning and serve practical purposes in daily life.

Traditional Maldivian dress, or “Dhivehi Libass,” is a vibrant and sleek attire showcasing the country’s rich heritage; characterised by its intricate needlework, dazzling colours, and hand-sewn stripes, which take at least minimum 15 days to finish. This activity aims to sustain this cultural tradition by providing hands on background to the guests.

The Maldives is also known for its lacquer work, “Laajehun,” which involves the delicate art of coating wood or coral with a glossy lacquer finish. This ancient technique produces breathtakingly decorative pieces, jewellery containers, and ornaments, all adorned with vibrant motifs inspired by marine life and natural surroundings.

Furthermore, guests can experience making Maldivian traditional “Dhoni” boats with local boat builders, who meticulously construct the iconic wooden vessels that have long been integral to the Maldivian way of life. These dhonis, known for their elegant curves and complex carvings, evoke a sense of history and a connection to the sea that has sustained the Maldivian people for centuries.

To celebrate this rich cultural heritage and promote the exceptional talents of Maldivian artisans, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo, in collaboration with the local community in GA. Vilingili has launched this program available throughout the year. This activity will give guests unique opportunities to engage with local artisans, learn about traditional crafts, and even participate in hands-on workshops.

Whether you are a cultural enthusiast, an art aficionado, or a curious traveler, Mercure Maldives Kooddoo welcomes you to fascinate yourself with the beauty of its culture and handicrafts. Experience the warmth of Maldivian hospitality as you explore the intricate designs, unravel the stories behind each masterpiece, and create lasting memories of a journey deeply rooted in tradition.
