One&Only Reethi Rah achieves EarthCheck Platinum Certification
One&Only Reethi Rah has received the EarthCheck Platinum Certification. This certification is awarded to organisations in the travel and tourism industry for a sustained commitment to sustainability.
Located in the North Malé Atoll, the resort contains 118 villas and has operated for over two decades. The certification recognizes its environmental practices.
Achieving Platinum status required specific actions and adherence to standards. The EarthCheck certification process evaluates energy and water consumption, waste management, and community engagement.
The resort has implemented several island-wide initiatives. It produces drinking water through reverse osmosis and recycles greywater for irrigation. Waste is converted into biogas and fertiliser. Solar panels provide energy, and the resort uses zero-emission vehicles for transport. An on-site water bottling plant reduces the use of single-use plastic, and sustainable heating systems are in place.
Marine conservation is a priority. The resort supports sea turtle rehabilitation through a partnership with the Olive Ridley Project and engages in coral propagation. The organisation monitors its resource use to inform decisions and employs preventive maintenance on its systems.
A commitment to sustainability is integrated into the resort’s operations, including staff practices, support for local sourcing, and community partnerships.
Jan Tibaldi, General Manager of One&Only Reethi Rah, stated, “Platinum Certification is not just a mark of achievement—it’s a symbol of responsibility. It reminds us of our role in protecting the environment we are so privileged to inhabit and share with guests from around the world.”
The resort plans to continue its sustainability work with new projects designed to reinforce its systems. The Platinum status is seen as a reaffirmation of the resort’s commitment to environmental responsibility.
