President announces construction of new airport in Noonu Atoll
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that construction of a new domestic airport in N. Vihafaru will begin early next year. The announcement was made during his visit to Noonu Atoll.
The President stated that the new airport is intended to address the needs of residents in islands such as Holhudhoo, Velidhoo, and Fodhdhoo, which are located at a distance from the existing airport in N. Maafaru.
“This province needs another airport from this region. I have decided to start the construction of an airport at Vihafaru near Velidhoo early next year,” the President said.
He added that the new facility would support both the local population and the tourism sector. In this regard, the President noted that a permit has already been issued under the Special Economic Zone (SEZ) framework for a township development project in the region.
The President said the government is aiming to complete the airport within a timeframe of two to six years. He also confirmed that infrastructure developments specified in the Holhudhoo land use plan would be included in the national budget for the coming year.
N. Maafaru currently hosts the atoll’s international airport, which has the highest number of private jet operations in the Maldives. Its runway has been upgraded to meet Code-E specifications.
