Umair Badheeu sets three national freediving records at Manado Depth Competition

Maldivian freediver Umair Badheeu delivered a remarkable performance at the Manado Depth Competition 2025, setting three new national records for the Maldives. Now in its third consecutive year, Indonesia’s sole international depth freediving event took place from 1st to 3rd August in North Sulawesi. Organised by Apnea Murex, the competition brought together 22 freedivers representing 11 nations.

Umair secured third place in the Men’s Overall category and achieved three national records for the Maldives across three consecutive days in the following disciplines:

  • Free Immersion – 68 metres: Descending and ascending using the rope without fins.
  • Constant Weight No Fins – 42 metres: Diving without the use of fins.
  • Constant Weight Bifins – 68 metres: Using regular bifins to descend and ascend.

These accomplishments were officially certified by AIDA International (Association for the Development of Apnea), one of the world’s leading governing bodies for the sport.

Reflecting on the event, Umair described the experience as both a technical and mental challenge. He remarked that achieving three records across three disciplines in as many days was intense yet highly rewarding. He expressed pride in representing the Maldives and gratitude for the continued support enabling his journey.

Umair’s training and development are supported by Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels, a prominent tourism group in the Maldives and an official partner in his athletic career.

“We are immensely proud of Umair’s accomplishments on the international stage,” said Mohamed Manih Ahmed, Managing Director at Kaimoo Resorts and Hotels. “His determination, humility, and performance embody the spirit of the Maldives. It is an honour to support his pursuit of excellence, and we hope his success encourages more young Maldivians to take up this emerging sport.”

Umair’s latest achievements further solidify his standing as the Maldives’ most accomplished freediver, elevating national standards and bringing international attention to the country’s growing presence in the global freediving community.
