Velaa Private Island appoints Mohamed Mausoom as General Manager
Velaa Private Island has announced the appointment of Mohamed Mausoom as General Manager, a founding team member who has been part of the resort’s journey since its very inception and who now becomes the first Maldivian to hold the position.
With more than two decades of experience in the luxury tourism sector, Mausoom’s career has been defined by an unwavering commitment to service excellence, people development, and the authentic warmth of Maldivian hospitality. His appointment is particularly significant given his deep-rooted connection to Velaa’s creation and evolution.
Mausoom joined Velaa Private Island in 2012 as Front Office Manager, becoming one of the earliest members of the team as the resort prepared to open its doors. As a founding employee, he played a pivotal role in shaping the culture, service philosophy, and operational standards that would come to define Velaa’s distinctive identity on the global luxury stage.
From the earliest stages of development through to opening and beyond, Mausoom worked closely with the owners, Jiri Smejc and Radka Smejc, helping to translate their bold and personal vision into reality. Conceived as a dream in the Maldives and built from the ground up without an established brand or prior industry template, Velaa Private Island stands today as a testament to courage, innovation, and passion.
As the resort flourished, Mausoom’s leadership responsibilities continued to grow. He was promoted to Rooms Division Manager in 2019 and Resident Manager in 2020, contributing significantly to the operational excellence, service refinement, and strong team culture that underpin Velaa’s reputation as one of the world’s most exclusive private island retreats.
Prior to joining Velaa, Mausoom was part of the pre-opening team at Huvafen Fushi, progressing from Butler to Head Butler. It was during this period that he first worked with the Smejc family, forming a professional bond rooted in shared values and a commitment to exceptional hospitality. A relationship that would ultimately shape the trajectory of his career.
Reflecting on his appointment, Mausoom expressed deep gratitude for the trust placed in him by the owners and their family, whose guidance and belief have been instrumental throughout his journey. He also recognises the dedication, creativity, and spirit of Velaa’s colleagues across all departments as the true foundation of the resort’s continued success.
