Villa Resorts showcases environmental initiatives on World Ozone Day 2025
Villa Resorts participated in the World Ozone Day 2025 celebrations held at Central Park, Hulhumalé, where the company presented the Maldives’ largest district cooling system alongside a portfolio of environmental initiatives. The event, held under the global theme ‘From Science to Global Action’, focused on technologies and sustainable practices that support ozone layer protection and climate change mitigation.
At the event, Villa Haven was highlighted for operating the Maldives’ largest district cooling system. The centralised chilled-water network replaces hundreds of individual air-conditioning units with a single high-efficiency system. Chilled water is delivered through insulated pipelines to villas and facilities, enabling close to 40 per cent resort-wide energy savings compared with conventional air-conditioning. The system also reduces the risk of refrigerant leakage by using ozone-friendly refrigerants with zero ozone-depletion potential, in line with national commitments under the Montreal Protocol.
Villa Resorts also showcased its solar power projects at Villa Nautica and Villa Park, where Swimsol solar arrays now supply around 20 per cent of the resorts’ daily energy demand. These projects generate renewable energy while preventing more than 2,500 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.
Other environmental initiatives across the Villa Resorts portfolio were also presented. These include coral reef restoration efforts, with over 130 coral frames planted, water efficiency projects to reduce wastage and ease desalination energy use, in-house water bottling to reduce single-use plastics, and ozone-assisted laundry systems that conserve energy and extend fabric life. Preventive maintenance and training programmes have been embedded in resort operations to ensure sustainability practices are implemented at both technological and operational levels.
Through these initiatives, Villa Resorts has established itself as one of the leading resort operators in the Maldives with significant investments in sustainability. Its participation in World Ozone Day 2025 served as a technical showcase and educational platform, underlining that environmental responsibility and hospitality can progress together.
