World Cleanup Day 2024: Maldives prepares for global event in K. Dhiffushi
World Cleanup Day 2024 will take place on September 20, continuing its mission to unite volunteers worldwide in a massive effort to rid the planet of trash. The event, which began in 2018, has seen increasing participation each year, with 19.1 million people across 211 countries and territories joining in 2023. This year, the Maldives will hold its main event on the island of K. Dhiffushi.
World Cleanup Day harnesses the power of volunteers to clean up litter and mismanaged waste from beaches, rivers, forests, and streets. The event emphasises cooperation and collaboration, bringing together citizens, businesses, and government agencies.
In 2023, the Maldives saw a record-breaking participation of 22,000 people from across the country, with the main event held in Kaafu Atoll Himmafushi. This year’s event in K. Dhiffushi aims to build on that success, involving even more participants and achieving greater impact.
Organisers encourage everyone to take part, highlighting that the event is not just about cleaning up the environment but also about fostering a sense of community and shared responsibility. Participants will join millions of others around the world, starting in New Zealand and continuing in a 36-hour green wave of cleanups until the event concludes in Hawaii.
World Cleanup Day continues to demonstrate the power of collective action, with each individual contribution adding up to a significant global impact.
