Maldives’ main airport handles 4 million passengers in first half of 2025
Velana International Airport (VIA) recorded 4 million passengers in the first six months of 2025, according to Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). This represents a 4% increase compared to the same period in 2024.
From January to June, VIA handled:
- 2.6 million passengers on international flights
- 579,079 passengers on domestic flights
- 859,797 passengers on seaplane flights
The highest single-day passenger volumes during this period were recorded on 4 January for wheel-based operations, with 26,658 passengers, and on 16 February for seaplane operations, with 7,439 passengers.
Flight movements also increased by 7% over the same period, with:
- 17,614 international flights
- 14,110 domestic flights
- 92,941 seaplane flights
MACL stated that passenger numbers are expected to rise further in the coming years with the opening of VIA’s new passenger terminal, which is designed to accommodate 7 million passengers annually.
