Jawakara Islands Maldives inaugurates state-of-the-art marine research facility
The Maldives’ largest marine research centre has been officially inaugurated at Jawakara Islands Maldives.
The opening ceremony was attended by Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim, Chairman of Champa Brothers Maldives Pvt Ltd Mohamed Moosa, Minister of Homeland Security and Technology Ali Ihusaan, and Chief of Defence Force Ibrahim Hilmy, along with senior officials from the resort and research centre.
The centre has been established to advance research on climate change, marine biodiversity, and coral reef health. Equipped with modern laboratories, quarantine facilities, and classrooms, it will provide a platform for both local universities and international institutes to carry out scientific studies. Research students will also have the opportunity to receive practical training at the facility.

Champa Brothers Chairman Mohamed Moosa underlined the significance of the initiative, noting the critical need to balance the growth of the tourism sector with the sustainable management of marine ecosystems.
To coincide with the inauguration, a workshop was launched with the participation of international professors and scientists, further strengthening the collaborative research potential of the new centre.
