Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives hosts Huraa School students for marine biodiversity visit
Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives welcomed students from Huraa School on 1 and 2 September 2026 for a marine biodiversity field visit aimed at increasing awareness of the Maldives’ marine environment and encouraging young people to take an active role in its protection.
The two-day initiative brought together 40 students, five teachers and three parents in each batch for a programme combining classroom learning, marine biodiversity observation and practical exposure to the resort’s Reef Cube Project.
The visit began with an educational session on the importance of healthy oceans and the challenges facing marine ecosystems, including coral degradation, pollution, overfishing and other pressures on marine life.
The discussions also linked broader environmental issues to the marine ecosystem surrounding Huraa, helping students better understand the relevance of conservation to their own island community.
A key component of the programme was an introduction to Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives’ Reef Cube Project. Students were shown the structures used in the initiative and learnt how coral restoration can support the recovery of reef environments.
Reef cubes provide a stable structure for coral growth and, as corals establish themselves, can help create habitats for marine species and support the biodiversity of surrounding reef systems.
The programme also gave students an opportunity to observe the marine environment first-hand and develop a clearer understanding of the relationship between coral reefs, marine species and the wider ocean ecosystem.
Located close to Huraa, Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives said its proximity to the local community provides opportunities to connect its environmental initiatives with students and residents.
By opening its conservation work to young people and providing practical learning opportunities, the resort aims to make sustainability and marine conservation more accessible and relevant to Maldivian students.
The field visit forms part of Cinnamon Dhonveli Maldives’ wider commitment to marine conservation, responsible tourism and community engagement.
Through the initiative, students were encouraged to recognise that protecting the ocean begins with understanding and caring for the reefs and marine life within their own surroundings.
