Maldives set to achieve 2024 tourism target of 2 million visitors on Thursday
The Maldives is on track to reach its annual tourism target of 2 million visitors, with the milestone expected to be achieved this Thursday. Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal confirmed that 1.96 million tourists had arrived in the country as of December 21.
Recent data from the Ministry of Tourism shows that an average of 6,259 tourists have been arriving daily this month, reflecting a 7.2% increase compared to the same period last year. Across the year, the daily average arrival rate has been 5,531 visitors, reinforcing the Maldives’ position as a sought-after travel destination.
China has emerged as the largest tourist market in 2024, contributing 260,940 visitors to the total. Other key markets include Russia, with 216,092 tourists, the United Kingdom, with 173,939, Germany, with 151,298, and Italy, with 133,736. The Indian market, which had been the largest source of visitors for the past three years, has seen a decline, with 126,055 tourists recorded so far this year.
Despite increases in departure tax and airport development fees, as well as an upcoming rise in the green tax and a TGST increase on tourism services from 16% to 17% earlier this year, the Maldives is receiving a record number of tourists. On average, visitors spend 7.7 nights in the Maldives, further underlining the appeal of the country’s luxury resorts and pristine natural beauty.
With just days remaining to achieve this year’s target, the record-breaking numbers highlight the continued success of the Maldives’ tourism industry and its ability to attract visitors from across the globe.
