
Maldives to add 1,290 new tourism beds in 2025
Tourism Minister Thoriq Ibrahim has announced that 156 locations are currently under development for tourism across the Maldives, with 1,290 new beds expected to be added to the market this year.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office on Wednesday, the minister provided an update on the tourism sector and the ongoing initiatives of the Ministry of Tourism.
According to Thoriq, 65 resorts are currently operated under Maldivian brands, while 110 are managed by international operators. Out of the 156 sites being developed for tourism purposes, 61 projects have experienced delays due to various reasons.
The ministry is exploring options to address the issues causing delays and resume development work where possible, the minister stated.
“The aim is to bring 1,290 beds into operation during the year,” he said.
As of now, the total number of beds in the tourism sector stands at:
- Resorts: 43,147 beds
- Hotels: 2,038 beds
- Guesthouses: 13,972 beds
- Liveaboard vessels: 3,133 beds
The number of operational tourism establishments includes:
- Resorts: 175
- Hotels: 15
- Guesthouses: 816
- Liveaboard vessels: 156
The minister also highlighted the ministry’s focus on addressing project delays and improving overall coordination in the development of tourism infrastructure.
