Maldives to develop new hotel training school, resort on L. Hulhimendhoo

Ministry of Tourism and The Maldives National University (MNU) on Saturday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a Hotel Training School and a 5-star resort on the island of L. Hulhimendhoo.

This collaboration aligns with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s vision to expand practical, world-class training opportunities for students in the Maldives and advance the nation’s standing as a leader in hospitality education.

The project, set to be developed on the island of L. Hulhimendhoo, will enable MNU students to gain hands-on experience in hotel management, operations, and customer service through internships within a luxury resort environment. By blending classroom education with real-world experience, the initiative aims to produce industry-ready graduates prepared to lead in the competitive hospitality field.

“This MoU is not only a commitment to improving education in hospitality but also to strengthening our tourism industry with a workforce trained to meet international standards,” stated a Ministry of Tourism official. “As the Maldives grows as a top travel destination, the need for skilled professionals in hospitality management is vital. This training school will help bridge that gap.”

MNU echoed the sentiment, celebrating the partnership as a “monumental step” that aligns with national educational and economic goals.

“This five-star training resort will provide our students with hands-on learning that fulfills President Muizzu’s commitment to quality, world-class training,” MNU said in a post on X. “By investing in our students’ skills, we’re shaping the future leaders of our tourism industry.”

This initiative represents a strategic investment in Maldives’ human capital, aiming to increase employment opportunities for Maldivians in higher-level positions within the tourism sector, which is central to the nation’s economy. The project will also contribute to sustainable growth by ensuring that Maldivian hospitality professionals are equipped with the practical knowledge and skills to support the nation’s tourism industry.
