Maldives wins top honours at World Travel Awards 2025 for Indian Ocean Region

The Maldives has once again demonstrated its prominence in global tourism by securing two prestigious accolades at the World Travel Awards (WTA) Indian Ocean Category. The announcement was made by the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), following the awards presentation at the World Travel Awards Africa & Indian Ocean Gala Ceremony held on 28th June 2025 at the Johari Rotana in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. MMPRC’s CEO and Managing Director, Ibrahim Shiuree, was present at the ceremony to accept the honours on behalf of the destination.

The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, are widely regarded as the highest recognition in the travel and tourism industry. Celebrating excellence across all areas of tourism, the awards honour organisations and destinations that consistently set industry benchmarks.

In the 2025 edition, the Maldives received the following titles:

  • Indian Ocean’s Leading Destination 2025 (previously awarded in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, and 2024)
  • Indian Ocean’s Leading Green Destination 2025 (also awarded in 2024)

Reflecting on this continued recognition, Shiuree stated that these awards underscore the Maldives’ reputation as a world-class travel destination. He emphasised the significance of such honours in highlighting the nation’s commitment to creating exceptional and sustainable experiences for global travellers, as well as MMPRC’s dedicated efforts in the ongoing development and promotion of the tourism sector.
