Mark Eletr, General Manager, Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives

Mark Eletr bids farewell to Kandooma Maldives after a transformational leadership journey

After four and a half years at the helm of Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives, General Manager Mark Eletr will depart the resort on 30 June, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, sustainability, people development and commercial success.

Arriving in the Maldives from Vietnam in late 2021, the Australian hotelier quickly established a reputation for challenging convention, embracing bold ideas and bringing people together to turn them into reality.

Reflecting on his time at Kandooma, Mark says his role was always about helping the resort evolve while preserving the character and spirit that made it one of the Maldives’ most loved island resorts.

“When I accepted the role, I knew success would be measured not only by financial performance but by how we cared for our people, our island and the future of the property. Kandooma has always had incredible potential, and it has been a privilege to work alongside such a committed team and supportive ownership group,” he says.

While Mark accepted many awards recognising Kandooma’s surfing, diving and suitability for families, he always attributed them to the island’s people.

During his tenure, Kandooma underwent significant operational, product and sustainability enhancements. Among the most visible was the creation of Surf Corner overlooking the resort’s famous surf break. What began as a simple idea to elevate the guest experience evolved into one of the island’s most popular gathering places during surf season.

A keen scuba diver, Mark also championed the continued growth of the resort’s pioneering Dive Free programme, helping establish Kandooma as one of the Maldives’ leading dive destinations. In 2025, that commitment was recognised when the resort was named Maldives Leading Dive Resort at the World Travel Awards.

Mark was responsible for getting many staff into the water. Encouraging them to learn to swim and for others to take the plunge and get their open water licences.

A passionate advocate for sustainability, Mark led initiatives ranging from renewable energy expansion and regenerative landscaping to composting programmes, reef restoration and long-term environmental planning. Under his leadership, Kandooma achieved Green Globe Certification creating a sustainability framework that will guide the resort well into the future.

His commitment to continuous improvement extended beyond guest facilities. Significant investment was made in staff accommodation, back-of-house infrastructure, technology upgrades and ongoing property maintenance, ensuring the resort remained competitive while enhancing the daily experience of team members.

Yet ask Mark what he is most proud of and the answer comes without hesitation.

“Developing people. Seeing team members grow, take on new responsibilities and progress their careers is incredibly rewarding. One of my proudest moments was watching former Resort Manager Shahid Hussain move into his own General Manager role. That’s what leadership is about – helping others succeed,” he says.

His contribution has also been recognised beyond the island. Earlier this year, Mark was appointed to the Board of the Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI), a fitting acknowledgement of a leader who has consistently looked beyond the boundaries of a single resort, championing collaboration, sustainability and the long-term success of Maldivian tourism.

Under Mark’s leadership, Kandooma strengthened its position across key international markets, welcomed world-class musicians through its long-standing Music in Paradise partnership, expanded its sustainability credentials and consistently delivered strong commercial, operational and guest satisfaction results.

A longstanding partnership with Music in Paradise allowed Mark to welcome many personalities and music royalty to Kandooma. Among them was repeat guest Delta Goodrem (pictured).

As Kandooma prepares for its next chapter, the impact of Mark’s leadership will remain visible across the island – from flourishing regenerative gardens to upgraded infrastructure, innovative guest experiences and, most importantly, the people he has inspired and developed.

“It’s been a remarkable journey,” says Mark. “We’ve achieved a great deal together, but more importantly we’ve built a culture where people are willing to try, learn and keep moving forward. That’s something I’ll always be proud of.”

Mark leaves Kandooma stronger than he found it and exceptionally well positioned for its exciting next chapter.
