Mohamed Umar Maniku is widely recognised as one of the founding fathers of tourism in the Maldives. In 1972, together with his partners, he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the country’s first resorts, marking the beginning of an industry that would go on to become the backbone of the Maldivian economy.

Throughout his career, Maniku was instrumental in shaping the resort tourism model that has made the Maldives a globally renowned destination. He co-founded and led Universal Enterprises, one of the largest and most influential hospitality companies in the country, which today owns and operates a portfolio of leading resorts.

In addition to his entrepreneurial success, Maniku was a strong advocate for sustainable tourism and the preservation of the natural environment, recognising early on the need to balance development with conservation. His leadership and vision earned him widespread respect across the industry, both domestically and internationally.

Through his decades of contribution, Maniku helped establish the Maldives as a premier luxury destination and mentored generations of tourism professionals. His passing marks the end of an era for Maldivian tourism, leaving behind a profound legacy that continues to shape the nation’s economy and identity.
