MOPA, The Residence Maldives sign sustainability partnership agreement
The Maldives Ocean Plastics Alliance (MOPA) and The Residence Maldives Resort have signed a sustainability partnership agreement aimed at strengthening environmental protection, promoting responsible waste management, and raising awareness about plastic pollution and recycling in the Maldives.
The agreement was signed by Sundaram, General Manager of The Residence Maldives Resort, and Akshay Chavan, General Manager of MOPA, marking an important step towards encouraging sustainable practices and fostering greater environmental responsibility within local communities.

Following the signing ceremony, a community awareness session on waste management and plastic pollution was conducted in Maamendhoo. The session was organised by the Maamendhoo Council, led by Council President Naasih. During the session, Akshay Chavan delivered a presentation to council members and local residents on the growing challenge of plastic waste in the Maldives, the importance of proper waste segregation, and the role of recycling in reducing environmental pollution.

The presentation also highlighted the recycling process and the valuable products that can be created from recovered plastic waste, demonstrating how discarded materials can be transformed into useful resources through effective collection and recycling systems. Participants were encouraged to adopt responsible waste disposal practices and contribute to keeping their island clean and environmentally sustainable.
As part of the partnership’s community engagement activities, MOPA and The Residence Maldives Resort jointly organised a cleanup drive in Maamendhoo, bringing together schoolchildren and local residents. In just 30 minutes, participants collected an impressive 346 kg of plastic waste and an additional 110 kg of other waste, bringing the total collected to 456 kg. This achievement highlights the impact that collective community action can make in a short period and reinforces the importance of regular cleanups, proper waste segregation, and effective recycling systems.

Further demonstrating its commitment to community well-being and sustainability, The Residence Maldives Resort donated two water filters to a local school in Maamendhoo. The donation supports access to filtered drinking water for students while reflecting the resort’s broader commitment to responsible resource use and community support.
Through this partnership, MOPA and The Residence Maldives Resort aim to strengthen collaboration between the tourism sector and local communities in addressing waste management challenges. The initiative highlights the importance of partnerships between environmental organisations, resorts, local councils, schools, and residents in building a cleaner and more sustainable Maldives.
By combining sustainability partnerships, environmental education, hands-on community action, and support for local schools, MOPA and The Residence Maldives Resort are taking meaningful steps towards reducing plastic pollution and creating a lasting culture of environmental responsibility across the islands.
