Tourist arrivals surpass 1.5 million as Maldives advances towards annual target

Maldives has welcomed more than 1.5 million tourist arrivals as of 8th September, according to official figures released by the Ministry of Tourism. The ministry confirmed Monday that this achievement reflects steady progress towards meeting the government’s annual target of attracting 2.5 million visitors in 2025.

The milestone comes as part of a sustained growth trajectory for the tourism sector, which continues to underpin the Maldives’ global reputation as the world’s leading destination. Officials emphasised that the achievement is an encouraging improvement in meeting the target set for the year, with millions more expected to arrive over the remaining months.

Data published by the Ministry of Tourism on Sunday shows that 33,773 visitors arrived in the Maldives during the first week of September alone, representing a 23.6 per cent increase compared to the same period last year.

China remains the top source market with 240,828 arrivals so far this year, followed by Russia with 182,315, the United Kingdom with 136,619, Italy with 107,736, and Germany with 104,764. Collectively, these markets continue to drive momentum in tourist arrivals, contributing significantly to the Maldives’ goal of surpassing the 2.5 million target by year-end.
