Visit Maldives appoints One Piece star Taz Skylar as Global Ambassador

Visit Maldives has appointed British–Spanish actor Taz Skylar, known for his role in Netflix’s record-breaking live-action series One Piece, as a Global Ambassador under its Global Ambassadorship Programme.

Through this appointment, the Maldives is brought into the international spotlight by one of the entertainment industry’s most influential contemporary figures. Skylar, who portrays Sanji – the Straw Hat Pirates’ chef – will use his ambassadorship to highlight the Maldives’ natural beauty, unique adventures, cultural heritage, and sustainable tourism efforts.

Netflix’s One Piece has enjoyed significant global success, becoming the most-watched show in 84 countries upon its release and surpassing the records set by Wednesday and Stranger Things. It has been recognised as one of the most successful live-action adaptations of an anime, breaking a trend of previous unsuccessful attempts.

Skylar’s strong online presence adds further value to the appointment. With over 1.8 million followers on Instagram, he maintains a highly engaged audience, averaging 45,000 likes and more than 300 comments per post. His influence provides Visit Maldives with a platform to connect with international audiences through authentic and engaging storytelling.

As part of his role, Skylar will visit the Maldives from 27 August to 15 September 2025 to participate in a destination marketing project. This initiative will focus on showcasing both the adventurous and culinary aspects of the country to a global audience.

The Global Ambassadorship Programme has been established with the following objectives:
