Maldives faces challenge from Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Project, says tourism minister

Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal stated that Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Project poses a challenge to the Maldives’ tourism industry. He noted that this initiative mirrors Maldives’ renowned attractions, including white sandy beaches, lush greenery, and peaceful islands.

Speaking on World Tourism Day, Faisal highlighted the Maldives’ position as a world-leading tourism destination. However, maintaining this position presents challenges. He emphasised that Maldivians are involved in the Red Sea Project, with some working as hotel managers and in other roles.

Faisal pointed out that this reflects the achievements and development of the Maldivian hospitality sector. He also outlined the government’s goals for tourism, which include increasing occupancy rates, encouraging higher tourist spending, and extending the average length of stay.

As of this year, 1.5 million tourists have visited the Maldives, with a target of 2 million by December. Faisal expressed confidence that this goal will be reached. Notably, the board of the Saudi Red Sea Project includes former Maldivian President Mohammed Waheed.
