Madifushi Private Island supports women’s employment through Dhiggaru community initiative
Madifushi Private Island continues to strengthen its connection with neighbouring communities through employment opportunities for women from Meemu Atoll, supporting livelihoods while bringing Maldivian culture and traditions into the guest experience.
Established during the resort’s pre-opening period, the initiative followed discussions between Madifushi’s management and the Dhiggaru Council to involve women from the neighbouring island in the resort’s workforce. Since then, the women have become valued members of the private island’s team, contributing to the care of the island and the cultural experiences that give the resort its distinctive character.
For the women involved, employment near their home island provides an income while helping them maintain their family and community connections. They have shared how their earnings support household needs, their children’s education and personal aspirations, including saving towards Umrah and Hajj.

Their contribution is visible throughout the island. From tending to pathways and public spaces to caring for the beaches surrounding its dining venues, their daily work helps maintain the welcoming surroundings guests enjoy. Behind these carefully maintained spaces are women whose commitment to the island is closely connected to their hopes for their families.
Mohamed Hilmy, General Manager of Madifushi Private Island, commented: “The women of Dhiggaru have become a valued part of life at our Island of Serene Wonders. They bring care to their work and share a wealth of knowledge about Maldivian traditions with our guests. We are proud to provide opportunities that support their aspirations while recognising the contribution they make to our island every day.”
Supporting their contribution also means understanding their responsibilities beyond work. The island’s management and operational teams work together to coordinate daily duties and departure arrangements, with consideration for family commitments, adequate rest and refreshments. This collaborative approach helps ensure that the women’s wellbeing remains central to the initiative.
The partnership extends beyond daily resort operations. Through the island’s Maldivian heritage experiences, the women share traditional crafts and coir-working skills with guests, offering opportunities to observe, ask questions and learn directly from those who practice these traditions. Their participation in cultural celebrations, including preparing Maldivian snacks for activities, adds a personal connection to the island’s hospitality.
