Baros Maldives appoints Christian Szabo as General Manager
Baros Maldives has announced Christian Szabo as its new General Manager.
He brings more than three decades of international hospitality to an iconic natural island that has been looking after guests since 1973.
Christian joins Baros from sister property Niva Dhigali, where he most recently served as General Manager. His career spans luxury hospitality across Europe, Russia and the Indian Ocean, including leadership roles with Marriott International and Ritz-Carlton. With a background in sales and marketing, he brings strong commercial expertise alongside a personal, hands-on style of leadership.
At Niva Dhigali, Christian and his team saw the resort named among the Top 20 Resorts in the Indian Ocean in the 2025 Condé Nast Traveller UK Readers’ Choice Awards and among the Top 10 in 2026.
“Christian has been a valued part of our group and we have seen first-hand his ability to bring people together, strengthen teams and deliver results while never losing sight of the guest experience,” says Visha Mahir, CEO of Versa Hospitality. “Baros is a very special property, with a character and heritage that are unique in the Maldives, and we believe Christian’s experience, energy and leadership style make him the right person to lead the resort into its future.”
Christian joins an island with a great deal to be proud of. Baros helped pioneer Maldivian tourism when it opened in 1973 and has spent more than five decades refining a style of hospitality that is personal, understated and rooted in its natural surroundings. Nearly 30% of bookings come from returning guests, and the island continues to earn international recognition: Travel + Leisure named Baros the No. 1 Resort in Asia in its 2026 World’s Best Awards, while the World Travel Awards named it Indian Ocean’s Leading Water Villa Resort 2026.
“There aren’t many places in the Maldives with a history like Baros, and it shows in small ways – in the warmth of the team, the incredible house reef, the guests who come back year after year,” says Christian. “I’m here to look after all of that, bringing fresh energy and new ideas, while always ensuring Baros stays true to its heritage.”
As Baros Maldives welcomes Christian to the team, the resort has also expressed its appreciation to Ibrahim Shijah for his service and contributions during his tenure, wishing him all the best in his future endeavours.
Christian will take up the role on 13 October.
