Maldives set for flurry of new resort openings by 2019
Work is currently underway on a collection of new resorts and hotels that will open in the Maldives throughout 2018 and early 2019. Following a push to improve hotel capacity, the Indian Ocean archipelago will play host to a dozen new hotels, with international brands all planning openings. Here is a list of the resorts.

Baglioni Resort Maldives
Opening in March 2018, Baglioni Resort Maldives is an Italian owned luxury resort that will cater to an exclusive international clientele in a lush tropical setting.Comprised of 96 lavish villas, gourmet restaurants and wellness experiences enhanced with the combination of a spa and a meditation pavilion, will provide its guests with an ultra-luxury experience, fringed with the charm of Italian hospitality.As it is part of the brand’s expansion plans, the new resort will be developed near four of the Maldives’ 114 registered island resorts.
Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fen Fushi
‘Sirru Fen Fushi’, which means ‘secret water island’, is a fitting moniker for the Fairmont’s addition the Maldivian hotel scene. Fairmont Maldives is the latest member of the prestigious Fairmont brand. The new luxury resort in Gaakoshibee Island of Shaviyani Atoll, Fairmont Maldives Sirru Fenfushi Resort is set to officially open in April 2018.
Lux* North Malé Atoll
Following the relaunch of the brand’s South Ari Atoll property in September 2016, Lux* Resorts is set to open its second resort in the Maldives on the island of Olhahali. Opening in early 2018, Lux* North Malé Atoll is an innovative property comprised of 67 penthouse residences, situated on both the beach and over water.These residences are crowned with private decks elevated above the house lagoon, offering guests an intimate perspective. With two restaurants, a rooftop bar, a cinema, a yoga plinth and the charm of starlight Jacuzzi as well as recreational activities make for the quintessential Maldivian luxury experience.
Mövenpick Resort & Spa Kuredhivaru Maldives
Located in Noonu Atoll and the first resort of its brand in the Maldives, Movenpick Resort & Spa Kuredhivaru Maldives offers accommodation choices of 105 beach and over water villas specially designed for private leisurely escapes, further enhanced by the fact that most of the islands in its vicinity are uninhabited.With the Marine National Park (MNP), consisting of 9 uninhabited islands just 15 minutes away by speedboat, guests can enjoy excellent diving excursions with the resort’s dive center in tow.
Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa
Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa will also debut its first resort in the Maldives in spring 2018, offering the options of combining both liveaboard adventure cruises and their 115 pool villa resort to reside at. Located at the edge of Raa Atoll, Carpe Diem Beach Resort & Spa also has a private waterpark of inflatable slides and a selection of restaurants and a spa.The unique blend of liveaboard cruises and leisure living is the perfect retreat for the adventurous.
OBLU Select at Sangeli
Situated in North Malé Atoll and operated by the renowned Indian Ocean Hospitality Brand, Atmosphere Hotels & Resorts, Oblu Select at Sangeli is a four star deluxe resort of 137 Beach and Water Villas; the group’s fourth property in the Maldives.Exclusive overwater Honeymoon Pool Suites, positioned on a separate sand bank within the Sangeli Lagoon and each providing skylight features and a private pool is designated for newlyweds on their Honeymoon. Additionally, with a diverse selection of recreational activities, more notably diving and snorkelling, given the striking dive locations in the vicinity of the resort, the resort is an ideal getaway for its guests.
Kudadoo Maldives Private Island
Expected to open its doors in mid-2018, Kudadoo Maldives Private Island by Hurawalhi is undergoing final preparations for its opening. Kudadoo will claim its own three-hectare island, offering just 15 overwater villas for more privacy and personalised experiences than even the island nation’s most coveted resorts.
Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa
Emerald Maldives Resort & Spa, opening in October 2018, will be developed on the island of Fasmendhoo in Raa Atoll. The resort, operating under a brand from global hospitality consortium Leading Hotels of the World, will have 60 beach villas and 60 over-water villas.Emerald Maldives offers its guests over 20 hectares of land and a 100 hectares of crystal clear lagoon water. The resort will have four restaurants dedicated to serving various cuisines to its guests. Located in Raa Atoll, the resort is just a 40 minute scenic seaplane ride away from the capital, Malé.
Pullman Maamutaa Maldives
AccorHotels has another Maldives hotel in its pipeline. On the island of Maamutaa, Accor will open the Pullman Maamutta Maldives in late 2018 with 120 villas, including 80 over-water villas and 40 on the beach.
Waldorf Astoria Maldives
One of Hilton Worldwide’s luxury hotel and resort brands, Waldorf Astoria Hotels and Resorts is once again opening a resort property in the Maldives. The resort will merge three islands in South Malé Atoll and is just 20 minutes away from the airport by speedboat.138 Beach and Overwater Villas, ranging from one to three bedroom villas and a four bedroom presidential suite, guarantees its guests privacy in their own spacious and luxurious bubbles while having access to the mainland where they are able to enjoy an extensive variety of dining experiences given the multiple restaurants and bars.
Gran Meliá Maldives
Located in Thaa Atoll, just 40-minutes away from Velana International Airport by speedboat, Gran Meliá Maldives offers 95 private villas, 3 restaurants, a bar, café, spa and a leisure centre.Exclusive private events and romantic dinners will be hosted by the resort on a neighbouring island.
Centara Grand Muthaafushi Resort & Spa
Scheduled to open later this yearr, Centara Grand Muthaafushi Resort & Spa is comprised of 101 land villas and water villas. Located in Baa Atoll, which is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, the resort is in the immediate vicinity of a world famous ecological site, providing the perfect playground for underwater photography enthusiasts and ocean lovers.The resort will host multiple international restaurants, one of which includes an underwater restaurant. A floating cinema, a Thai Spa, a fitness centre and several other facilities are expected as well.
Chatwal Maaga Maldives
Dream Hotel Group, the New York-based hotel brand and management company is developing The Chatwal Maaga Maldives in North Ari Atoll. The resort will offer 80 ultra-luxury villas, six private beach villas and two presidential villas. Three gourmet restaurants will allow its guests to have world class culinary experiences in a luxurious tropical paradise.
The Nautilus Maldives
A privately-owned island in the heart of the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, The Nautilus Maldives is set to open its doors in November. Each of the 26 houses featured in the resort is a suite, with separate living room and bedroom.Just 15 one- and two-bedroom houses line the island’s beaches, hidden away among coconut trees, palms, and tropical greenery. Eleven one- and two-bedroom houses stand on stilts over the lagoon. The resort, with the serious ambition of being noted as one of the leading luxury resorts in the world, will also feature three restaurants and a poolside bar.
Hard Rock Hotel Maldives
Hard Rock International, globally recognised as a world-class entertainment and lifestyle brand, will expand its portfolio with Hard Rock Hotel Maldives and Hard Rock Café Maldives.The two are scheduled to be opened in October 2018, as part of the Emboodhoo Lagoon project – the country’s first multi-island integrated resort project. Hard Rock Hotel Maldives will be one of three resorts included in the development, boasting 178 expansive guestrooms, family suites, beach villas and one and two-bedroom overwater villas.
