Sheraton Maldives celebrates marine conservation milestone 500th coral frame in partnership with Reefscapers

Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, renowned for its commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship has celebrated a momentous achievement in marine conservation with the establishment of the 500th coral frame in collaboration with Reefscapers, a government-appointed company in marine consultancy for coral restoration.

Since its inception in 2020, the resort has been unwavering in its dedication to marine conservation, with substantial support from Reefscapers, generous guests, and online sponsors. The recent event, held at the resort’s Anchorage beach, brought together valued and loyal Marriott Bonvoy members, as well as the distinguished British Photographer of the Year and a passionate Marine Conservationist, Oliver Clarke.

The 500th coral frame milestone not only signifies a remarkable achievement in coral restoration efforts but also underlines the collective impact of the resort’s ongoing commitment to preserving the Maldives’ delicate marine ecosystem. These collaborative efforts have led to the successful rescue of 25,000 coral colonies. In addition to the coral frames, Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa takes pride in its contribution to the construction of the largest human-made coral pyramids. These coral structures now serve as a new home for a diverse range of marine species, including blacktip reef sharks, stingrays, and various fish species.

Commenting on this achievement, Kate Sheridan, the Marine Biologist spearheading the project and research, remarked, “The establishment of the 500th coral frame is a testament to the positive impact that can be achieved through collaborative conservation efforts. These efforts not only protect existing coral colonies but also create thriving ecosystems that support a myriad of marine life, at a time where the existence of coral reefs is under increasing pressure.”

Mohamed El Aghoury, General Manager of Sheraton Maldives Full Moon Resort & Spa, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Our commitment to marine conservation is deeply ingrained in our values at Sheraton Maldives. This milestone is a reflection of the dedication of our team, the support of our guests, and the success of our partnership with Reefscapers. We are proud to contribute to the well-being of the Maldives’ marine environment.”

This initiative aligns seamlessly with Marriott International’s “Serve 360: Doing Good in Every Direction”, and “Good Travel with Marriott Bonvoy” initiatives, overarching sustainability goals and making a positive impact on the community wherever possible.
