Sun Siyam Olhuveli wins Resort League 2026 South Malé Zone Championship
Sun Siyam Olhuveli Maldives, part of Sun Siyam’s Lifestyle Collection, celebrated a memorable night on home ground on September third, claiming the football Resort League 2026 South Malé Zone Championship following a dramatic final against Hard Rock Hotel Maldives.
Hosted at Sun Siyam Olhuveli for the first time, the South Malé Zone competition brought together teams, supporters and football fans from across the region, with the resort welcoming visiting players and officials in true Maldivian style, complete with traditional conch shells, refreshments and plenty of support from team members throughout the tournament.
Sun Siyam Founder, Chairman and Managing Director Ahmed Siyam Mohamed officially opened the tournament, reflecting his longstanding commitment to supporting young people and local communities through sport, including the development of football grounds across local islands. He remained closely involved throughout the first day, joining the team and supporters in cheering on Sun Siyam Olhuveli at the start of what would become an extraordinary journey to the title.
It was a victory built on determination. After two difficult defeats at the beginning of the competition left Olhuveli at the bottom of the group and close to elimination, the team refused to give up. A turnaround through the remaining stages saw them progress through the playoffs, quarter-final and semi-final before earning their place in the final on home ground.
The championship match delivered another comeback. Hard Rock Hotel Maldives took a 2–0 lead in the second half, but Olhuveli responded quickly, with Shiau pulling one back before Sinaan found the equaliser to bring the match to 2–2. With the scores still level at full time, the title came down to penalties. Goalkeeper Sumaid stepped up when it mattered most, making decisive saves as Olhuveli secured the shoot-out 3–2 and lifted the South Malé Zone trophy in front of the home crowd.
The win marks Olhuveli’s second South Malé Zone championship in three years and was celebrated by players, coaches, supporters and team members across the resort.
More than the result itself, the victory reflected the spirit behind the team: starting from the bottom, continuing to believe and fighting their way back together.
For Sun Siyam Olhuveli, hosting the tournament also brought an opportunity to showcase another side of island life, bringing together sport, community and the warm Maldivian hospitality that sits at the heart of the resort.
From a difficult start to lifting the trophy on home ground, Resort League 2026 became a journey to remember, and a championship shared by the entire Olhuveli team.
