Madifushi Private Island’s dive instructor Afa Abdulla: Exploring depths and dreams

Madifushi Private Island offers more than a luxurious getaway—it provides a gateway to the vibrant underwater world. At the heart of its dive experiences is Afa Abdulla, a passionate dive instructor whose journey is as inspiring as the ocean she adores. Afa’s dedication to diving and her vision for sustainability make her an integral part of Madifushi’s unique allure. Her story embodies the seamless blend of passion, perseverance, and purpose.

Afa’s connection with the sea started young, shaped by the natural beauty surrounding her in the Maldives. “Since I was a kid, I knew I wanted to work near the sea,” she shares. “As a diving instructor today, I can say it’s one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve ever made. I’m grateful for the opportunity to share my passion with others.” Her path to becoming a dive instructor began with an internship as an excursion host, which opened the door to her first diving courses. Over time, she advanced from dive master to instructor, a journey marked by perseverance and a love for the ocean.

For Afa, the ocean has always been more than a backdrop; it is her constant source of inspiration and her workplace. Diving, she believes, is not just a skill but an opportunity to introduce people to a part of the world they may never have thought to explore. “It’s not just about diving,” Afa explains. “It’s about taking people to my happy place and showing them a new world they may have never experienced before. The look on their faces after their first dive—that joy is unforgettable.”

Afa’s career in the hospitality and diving industry has been both enriching and challenging. “Staying away from my family has been difficult,” she reflects. “But I’ve been fortunate. Everyone I’ve met along the way has been incredibly helpful.” This gratitude is evident in the way she approaches her work—with a deep sense of responsibility for both the marine environment and the guests she guides. Her passion lies in fostering a deep connection between visitors and the underwater world, leaving them with memories that last a lifetime.

Life as a dive instructor on Madifushi is dynamic, with each day tailored to guest preferences. “On a regular working day, we might have morning two-tank dives, an afternoon dive, or even night dives,” Afa explains. “If there are no dives scheduled, we take guests snorkelling, dolphin cruising, or fishing.” For Afa, Madifushi’s distinctiveness lies in its location. “The island is secluded within the atoll, away from other resorts. We have access to a diverse and healthy ecosystem,” she says. The dive centre, operated by a third-party company, MSTS, boasts an all-local team, a point of pride for Afa. “We prioritise local talent and skills, providing an authentic service experience.”

A core element of Afa’s work is her commitment to sustainability. “Incorporating sustainability and social responsibility isn’t just important—it’s a must,” she asserts. “We depend on the sea for sustenance and protection. By implementing eco-friendly diving practices, sustainable fishing, and snorkelling, we ensure that this beautiful ecosystem is preserved for generations to come.” Afa is particularly proud of the healthy coral reefs around Madifushi, which recently recovered from the effects of a heatwave. “The coral life here is incredibly vibrant. Even during challenging times, like the heatwave, the deeper corals showed resilience, and now they’re back to their healthy state.”

Though Afa thrives in her role, she acknowledges the challenges of being a woman in a male-dominated field. “I have a great team, but I do miss having a female colleague. It’s fun and inspiring to see more women considering diving as a career,” she says. Afa draws inspiration from her mentor, the first female course director in the Maldives. “She’s all about helping others by sharing her knowledge and experiences. I dream of becoming like her one day,” Afa reveals.

As someone deeply committed to personal and professional growth, Afa has valuable advice for anyone considering a career in hospitality or diving. “Make sure you love what you do. Work on yourself and your skills, and don’t let discrimination or criticism deter you. Follow your dreams,” she says. Her words are particularly meaningful for young Maldivians, especially women, who aspire to join the hospitality industry. “You’ll face challenges, but it’s important to stay true to your passion and focus on your growth.”

Despite her demanding schedule, Afa maintains a healthy work-life balance. “I never gave up my childhood hobbies like painting or going to the gym. Taking time for myself is how I stay balanced,” she shares. Her approach to life and work is guided by a philosophy of harmony—between herself, her guests, and the environment. Her vision for the future of hospitality in the Maldives includes a more sustainable and tech-driven approach. “I hope we can offer personalised services to our diverse travellers while emphasising health, safety, and community engagement,” she says.

Afa’s career is defined not just by her achievements but by the connections she forms with people from around the world. “Building lifelong friendships with guests and seeing their joy is what stands out to me,” she says. She fondly recalls a recent compliment from a guest who overcame their fear of diving. “They said, ‘I’ll never forget you.’ Moments like these remind me why I do what I do.

With Afa’s guidance, guests at Madifushi Private Island experience the Maldives’ underwater wonders like never before. From spotting sea turtles while paddle-boarding to witnessing vibrant coral reefs, every encounter is unique. Afa’s wealth of knowledge, combined with her unwavering passion, creates an unforgettable experience for those fortunate enough to dive under her instruction.

For Afa, the ocean isn’t just a workplace—it’s a lifelong passion. Her story is a testament to following one’s dreams and the profound impact of sharing that journey with others. As she continues to inspire her guests and peers, Afa remains a beacon of dedication and hope in the world of diving and hospitality. Her vision for the future, coupled with her unwavering commitment to sustainability and community, ensures that her work will leave a lasting legacy for generations to come.
