OBLU SELECT Lobigili’s Meesan Saaed: Carving a path in hospitality

Growing up between Addu and Fuvahmulah, Meesan Saaed developed a deep appreciation for the freedom, nature, and rich marine culture of the Maldives. Her journey into the hospitality industry was shaped by her determination to break barriers and pursue a career that was not traditionally encouraged for women in her community.

“Where I come from, the hospitality industry was not considered a career for women. However, I wanted to do something different and pursue my dream of becoming a hospitality professional,” she says.

Meesan took her first step towards this goal by studying hospitality at Seenu Atoll School, graduating in 2016 with a BTEC diploma. She then moved to Malé, seeking independence and experience. A temporary part-time role as a cashier provided her with financial stability while she searched for opportunities in the industry. She soon found her first hospitality role as a Kids’ Club Attendant at a Maldivian resort.

“While my goal was to work in a frontline role, I took the opportunity to observe and learn how to manage the workspace and handle guest requests. Within one year and seven months, I gained valuable experience,” she recalls.

Her career trajectory was briefly disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, but she soon secured a role as a receptionist at another resort. This experience helped her build confidence and gain extensive industry knowledge. It was during this time that she encountered the concept of an Island Hostess, a role that resonated with her aspirations. She realised that this was the path she wanted to follow.

“After a year of experience, I was given the opportunity to join OBLU SELECT Lobigili as an Island Hostess in December 2023. I truly believe this company will help me achieve my dream career, and I am grateful to be part of the team,” she says. “The support and inspiration I have received here have played a huge role in shaping who I am today.”

Meesan sees her role as an Island Hostess as one that requires responsibility, independence, and a strong sense of connection with guests. The work environment at OBLU SELECT Lobigili, where 80% of the team is female, has reinforced her belief in the capabilities of women in the industry.

“Being an Island Hostess comes with great responsibility and fosters a strong sense of independence, love, and compassion. It’s an incredibly safe and comfortable environment to work in. This role has shown me that women are capable of achieving great success and that we, too, can dream big. The leadership team is incredibly supportive, and I am proud to be part of such an inspiring workplace.”

The role of an Island Hostess is closely connected to Maldivian traditions of hospitality and leadership within island communities. Meesan sees the role as a modern extension of this cultural legacy, bringing warm, personalised service to guests while staying true to the values of the Maldivian way of life.

Her daily routine is centred on creating memorable experiences for guests. “My day is filled with warm welcomes, personalised service, and creating unforgettable moments. My mornings begin with friendly greetings and ensuring every detail of their stay is perfect. Throughout the day, I don’t just see it as a job, it truly feels like home.”

Reflecting on her time at OBLU SELECT Lobigili, Meesan highlights the supportive leadership as a key factor in her professional growth. “It may not be new in a general sense, but for me, it is exciting to see the leaders actively engaging with and supporting the team. Their hands-on approach is incredibly inspiring and motivating.”

For Meesan, the Maldives’ greatest feature is its diversity, both in language and marine life. She is passionate about sharing these unique aspects of Maldivian culture with guests. “The cultural diversity across different parts of the Maldives, our traditional cuisine, the breathtaking beauty of our marine life, and the unique texture of our sand—these are all aspects I love to share.”

As she continues her career in the hospitality industry, Meesan remains committed to personal and professional growth, while encouraging other young women to follow their dreams. “This journey has shown me that anything is possible with determination. Women can achieve great things in hospitality, and I hope to see more of us taking on leadership roles in the future.”
