Resorts, hotels to begin reporting guest data through new MIRA system
The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has launched the Maldives Guest Information System (MGIS), a digital portal developed for tourism businesses to submit information on tourists staying at their properties.
Finance Minister Hassan Zareer officially launched the system at a ceremony held on Thursday.
MIRA said the system would streamline the submission of information on tourists visiting the Maldives and allow businesses registered for Green Tax to report guest information through a single platform.
Under the new system, information submitted through MGIS will also be considered as information required to be submitted to the Ministry of Tourism.
MIRA said tourism establishments will be able to integrate their existing guest management systems with MGIS, reducing the need to manually prepare and submit guest information.
Resorts, hotels and guesthouses with more than 50 beds will be required to begin reporting through MGIS from November. Other parties registered for Green Tax will be required to use the system from January.
The launch comes as MIRA introduces changes to reporting and registration requirements in the tourism sector.
Following amendments to the Goods and Services Tax Act, foreign entities required to register with MIRA have been instructed to complete their registration through a submission portal provided by the authority.
MIRA has also instructed all businesses liable for Tourism Goods and Services Tax (TGST) to report information on foreign agencies and booking platforms involved in transactions for the sale of rooms at Maldivian resorts.
The requirement applies to resorts, guesthouses and travel agencies dealing with overseas agencies and booking platforms in the sale of resort accommodation.
